Not far after the predictable lot are the schools who are setting pace for a whole new breed of young business leaders from B-Schools like XLRI (2nd position), Narsee Moonji Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (6th position), Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad (7th position), etc. SIBM having being ranked on the fourth position after IIM, Bangalore the Economic Times ranking this year brings in a host of changes. MDI, Gurgaon, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, IIM-Kozhikode, ISB Hyderabad are also seen in the Tier 2 section, achieving high spots.

An MBA from a top ranked school is extremely important in this competitive scenario. While schools abroad are coveted by many, the Top MBA schools of India have outdone many of them in the quality and experience of education. CNBC TV18 ‘A of B Ranking’ puts IIM A as # 1 Businessschool in India

According to the Rankings released on CNBC TV18, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad(IIM A) has been crowned as India’s # 1 B-school.

In a first of its kind research and analysis, the ‘A of B Ranking’ survey looks at three different viewpoints to present the complete 360 degree picture on which are the leading MBA Schools in India. While rigorous data-driven analysis uses information and data provided directly by IIMs and 90+ other MBA Schools , perception poll on MBAUniverse.com brings perspectives from the MBA students, aspirants and alumni; and, recruiter’s poll on Jobstreet.com bares the mind of HR community.

According to the analysis of quantitative data from MBA schools, while IIM-A is the # 1 B-school, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM B) and Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM L) has been ranked as the # 2 & # 3 B-schools in India. Delhi NCR bases Management Development Institute (MDI) has edged out a few IIMs and other top MBA schools to claim the # 4 position.

Going by the Quantitative Survey data, Jamshedpur based MBA School Xavier’s Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) is pegged at #5 position. Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM C) is ranked at # 6. The real surprise in the Quantitative Rankings comes in from New Delhi based MBA School International Management Institute (IMI) which is ranked at # 8. Table below has more details.

The data from IIMs and 90+ other MBA schools was analyzed by global research agency TNS to prepare a Quantitative Ranking of India’s Top MBA schools.

Since beliefs and perceptions of management community matter, Student’s poll data on India’s Top MBA schools was analyzed as well. Over 5,000 stakeholders participated in this poll on MBAUniverse.com. The perception data was also analyzed by TNS. The data analysis offers a lot of interesting trends.

That IIMs enjoy great brand equity, is clear from the analysis of the Student’s Poll data. As many as five IIMs are part of Top 10 rankings table. While IIM A, IIM B, IIM C and IIM L are ranked as top 4 MBA schools in India, IIM Indore is ranked at # 8. One of the pioneers on management education in India, Delhi based Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) is ranked at #6. Known for its strong brand building initiatives, and rising academic credibility, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad (ISB) is ranked at # 7.

The Quantitative Survey sought detailed inputs from Directors and Deans on three key parameters via a 30+ pages rigorous questionnaire: a) quality of talent admitted to an MBA school, b) quality of academic inputs, pedagogical tools and industry exposure during two years MBA programme, and c) Quality of career & placements received by students at the end of the MBA course. Academicians across India’s leading 90 MBA schools provided weightage score to these parameters, which were then used for final analysis.

‘Don’t think about your CAT scores’ By Himadri Das, Chairperson Admissions – International Management Institute (IMI)

Once upon a time, not very long ago, it was possible for you to step out of a test centre after taking the CAT and predict within a few hours, with a reasonable degree of accuracy, what your CAT score was going to be. You could then decide which B-schools to apply to based on your predicted CAT scores.
All you had to do was to look at historical CAT cut-offs for these B-schools and if your predicted CAT scores indicated you were in contention, then you applied, else you saved yourself the application fee. You also did not need to waste money and apply to B-schools lower down just as a back-up if you were confident about your CAT score prediction.
This prediction was no rocket science. You had a decent feel of how many questions you answered correctly and informed your coaching institute about this. They would compile this information from many candidates and calculate a percentile score that would be a fairly good approximation of your actual CAT score.
However, things have changed. Last year CAT went high-tech and the test was conducted online on multiple dates. The same applies this year with even more test taking dates than last year. CAT now has a large question bank with questions of different complexity levels. The day you take the test, a randomly generated set of questions from this heterogeneous bank gets selected. On some days the test may have more questions of high complexity and on some days it might have more questions of low complexity. This necessitates the process of normalisation, where your score is adjusted either upwards or downwards based on the complexity level of the test you took.
If you end up taking a high complexity level test, your score will get normalised upwards. On the other hand, if you take a low complexity test, your score will get normalised downwards. This means that any kind of predictability of your CAT score after taking the test goes out the window.
Consider what happened to Ashima Chatterjee and Naresh Singh (names changed) who took the online CAT last year. They both came out of their CAT centres feeling very low thinking that they would have to be very lucky to even touch the 90 percentile level. They had been targeting their dream B-school in Delhi which had a historical cut-off of 95 percentile. They had already applied to this B-school before taking the CAT and were regretting having done so as the application fee would be wasted.
When the CAT scores were declared they jumped with joy to see 98 percentile scores. They are now first year students in their dream Bschool in Delhi.
So what do you do? After taking the CAT do not think about what score you will get. Apply to a wide range of B-schools with different historical cut-offs ranging from high to not so high and then keep your fingers crossed. Good luck!

admissions, International Management
Institute (IMI), Delhi

CAT online 2010 commenced

Finally the much-awaited CAT online exam of 2010 began from today and will continue for 20 days. The biggest question in the minds of not only CAT aspirants but also parents and other agencies is, Will Common Admission Test (CAT) 2010 be trouble-free? And now the answer is ready at hand. Unlike last year, after coming out from the examinations the students had a very different story to narrate. The 2 hours’ session of clicking mouse, drawing crucial calculations and making critical decisions became easier with the introduction of new technical rules where the START button triggered the self timer to begin and the END button closed the session. Twenty pages’ DEMO was created to make it user friendly for students who are less conversed with computers.

The paper had 20 questions of Data Interpretation, which was easy to handle, followed by another 20 sets of English questions. The third set had mathematics in it. All technical glitches that raised questions on the ability of IIMS and the testing agency to hold the online CAT successfully for 2009 finally got obliterated. This year, the IIMS and the testing agency have ensured that all contingency measures have been taken to ensure a fair and smooth CAT 2010 and the students are satisfied with the ways things went.
